Box dimensions and layout
Outside
- The box is accurate based on the drawings made by Bear/Total Composites.
- The main frame of the Unimog (red) is also pretty accurate – I measured it by hand.
- The subframe (green) has changed quite a bit from this version to the actual product. At some point I will update the model.
- The tire carrier was never accurate, I only built it as a conceptual model. At some point I will update the model.
- The pass-through is as tall as I could make it without cutting into the sheet metal at the top of the cab. Doing that would have only given us another 6″ anyway. The frame of the rear wall of the cab in the drawings is actually measured and recreated accurately. I will add the roof at a later date when I am ready to build out the pop-top roof.

Inside
This was another example of conceptual model. I think this will be the actual layout, but who knows how things will unfold. The main reason I built out the interior was so that I could place the two doors which had to be cut before assembling the box. I don’t think there will be a ton of deviation though.
Some important points of design:
- One of my goals is to have a collapsible dinette that can convert to a queen size bed. Our main bedroom will be above the truck cab in a pop-up tent, but in extreme conditions or if stealth is needed, I wanted to have a backup option in the insulated box. The four small green pillows that are placed in the walkway are part of that conversion. Normally those pads will live on the walls as seat backs and the “hall” or walkway will be open.
- I did put an AC unit on the wall but I have no idea if that is where it will live. We do want a mini-split though.
- We have no windows in these drawings. I decided to add windows later, after the buildout and we know exactly how we want everything to be. One thought is that we don’t put any windows at all to aid in heating and cooling. We have a ton of windows in the cab and eventually in the pop-top sleeping area. Maybe that is good enough.
